인간은 과거로부터 정체성을 찾아오고 미래에서 존재 가능성을 찾아낸다. 이 정체성과 가능성이 우리의 인간다움을 만들어낸다. 우리가 만약 끊임없이 현재의 감각에만 침착한다면 우리는 우리의 인간다움을 잃게 된다. ‘현재는 과거와의 끊임없는 대화’라는 에드워드 카(E.H. Carr)의 말처럼 현재는 항상 과거와 미래를 양단으로 하는 연속적 흐름의 시간선상에서 연결점이 되어야 한다. 건축 역시 그러하다. 건축은 공간을 다루고 있으며, 공간은 개개인의 경험들이 축적된, 거대한 기억의 창고이다. 또한 건축은 도시라는 사회를 다루고 있으며, 개인의 경험을 넘어선 미래지향적인 사회적 가치를 추구한다. 현재의 건축은 이 둘 사이를 연결하는 연결점을 의미한다. 하지만 근현대의 건축은 과거의 형식을 단칼에 자르고 그 자리에 생경한 감각을 채워 넣었다. 이 감각을 향한 끊임없는 침착이 공간의 기억을 지우고, 미래의 존재 가능성마저 외면할 때, 건축은 건축다움을 상실하고 단순한 이미지로만 남게 된다. 이제 우리는 건축다움을 회복해야 한다. 회복은 형식의 복원, 과거로의 회귀를 의미하지 않는다. 회복은 건축의 존재적 정체성과 사회적 가능성 사이의 재연결을 의미한다. 건축 디자인은 공간의 경험을 공유하고 사회적 가치를 추구해야한다. 본 공모전이 추구하고자 하는 목적은 젊은 건축가들이 우리 일상의 공간과 장소를 새로운 관점과 상상력으로 재구성하고, 이를 바탕으로 지역성의 상실, 계층 간의 갈등, 차별과 소외, 자연환경의 파괴 등 사회의 문제점들에 대응하는 건축의 사회적 가치를 회복할 수 있는 창의적인 해결책을 제안하는 것이다.

Humans tend to seek an identity reflected from the past and discover the possibility for an existence from the future. Such a pursuit of identity and possibility creates a sense of humanity. However, humanity will be lost if we remain perpetually restful about the tangible senses only. As Edward Carr (E.H. Carr) highlighted, “Historyisacontinuousdialoguebetweenthepastandthepresent”, the present should always be a connecting dot along the linear flow of time, with the past and the future at both ends. The same can be said for architecture. Architecture embraces space, and space is a vast storehouse of memories, where people’s personal experiences are accumulated. Architecture also encompasses society characterized as cities, and pursues future-oriented social values that transcend mere personal experiences. Today's architecture embodies the linkage between the two. However, modern architecture tends to relentlessly replace any hint of the past with a novel sense instead. When the constant restfulness towards the novel senses erases the memory of space and even dismisses the possibility of a future existence, architecture then begins to lose its authenticity and in its place we find a mere image. It is quite clear that now is the time to restore the authenticity of architecture. Restoration does not simply mean a recovery of a form, or a regression to the past. Instead, it means a rejoining between the existential identity and social potential of architecture. Architectural design should express the experiences associated with space while conveying social values at the same time. This contest aims to encourage young architects to reconstruct our everyday spaces and places through their imagination to present new perspectives, and thereby to propose the creative solutions necessary to restore the social value of architecture in tackling social issues such as the disappearance of regional characteristics, conflicts between the social classes, discrimination and marginalization, and the destruction of a natural environment.
